Copper has been used for over 11,000 years. We do not know who the original discoverer was, or the exact date when they discovered it. We do know however, that the Roman Empire used Copper and relieved it from Cyprus. This is where Copper received its name, form the Latin word “cuprum” which means “from the island of Cyprus.” Now days we can find copper in The United States, Chile, Zambia, Zaire, Peru and Canada. Copper is not a rare element like gold and can be bought a cheap prices for now days copper is is generally mixed in with stronger, harder elements to make alloys so that the copper will not be soft and will be harder so that we can use it to make things that require a metal that will not wilt etc.
There are other uses for Copper, but first we must retrieve the Copper. And this can prove to be very damaging to our environment. Copper mines produce mass quantities of smoke and pollution daily and this may be contributing to the problem of our depleting ozone layer. So ask yourself, Copper is nice for many things, but what is more important, a healthy earth or material goods? Home Page
